Katie Hogg
Katie Hogg(b.2000) is a contemporary artist from Glasgow whose practice centers on the relationship between maker and material. Drawing inspiration from the foundations of formalist sculpture, she approaches making with an awareness of form, space, and balance. Hogg uses low-tech materials in her work, which facilitates reactionary play and allows for an intuitive and individual experience of making.
Coming from a working-class family, Hogg's choice of materials reflects her desire to create art that is accessible to all. She challenges the notion that art must be expensive or exclusive by using simple materials that anyone can access.
Hogg's ongoing series, "Objects of Play," consists of intuitively made objects that are curated into site-specific installations. These installations enable the objects to form relationships and narratives among themselves, creating immersive experiences that play with scale, texture, and repetition. Her use of primary shapes and acidic colors expresses ideas of kitschiness and fairytales, adding a playful element to her work.
For Hogg, her work is never truly complete. Objects are stuck in cycles of evolution, continuously being transformed and re-made to adapt to their environments. Through this ongoing process, she creates art that is both approachable and engaging, inviting the viewer to participate in the creation of meaning.
